Bay Shore Senior Residences is a 75-apartment affordable housing development in Bay Shore, Suffolk County, for LGBTQIA+ older adults aged 55 and over. It was completed in 2021 as a roughly $30 million development and is described by the LGBT Network as the first and only LGBTQIA+-friendly affordable senior housing on Long Island. Apartments are affordable to households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income, and twelve of them are set aside for households who need the supportive services the LGBT Network provides. Eligibility is by income, so the building is not restricted to LGBTQIA+ residents. The ground floor holds an 8,000 square foot senior center operated by the LGBT Network, with programming across health and wellness, food and nutrition, and the arts. As with Pride Place in Seattle, that on-site center is the substantive difference between affirming housing and housing that simply says it is welcoming. Fountaingrove Lodge is a senior-living community in Santa Rosa, California, for adults 55 and over, built for LGBTQIA+ older adults and their allies. It is one of the earliest purpose-built affirming communities of its kind in the country and remains one of the few that spans more than one level of care on a single campus. Homes range from one-bedroom apartments to two-bedroom suites and bungalows. Independent living, assisted living and memory care are all offered, and the community reports full-time nursing staff on site seven days a week, which is the practical difference between a community you may have to leave and one you may not. Shared amenities include dining led by an executive chef, a swimming pool and hot tub, a wellness center, and patio and garden space. Activities are programd rather than incidental, and the community's stated aim is a living experience that celebrates the vibrancy of living authentically as an LGBTQIA+ person and ally. Pricing is not published. Life-plan and continuing-care communities often involve an entrance fee as well as a monthly charge, and the structure varies considerably between contracts, so ask specifically what is refundable and what happens if your care needs change.

Living Out is an independent-living apartment community in Palm Springs for active LGBTQIA+ adults aged 55 and over, and their allies. It is a market-rate community rather than an affordable one, and it is designed around the idea that residents should not have to edit themselves to feel comfortable where they live. Residences run from roughly 1,098 to 1,831 square feet, finished to condominium standard, with weekly apartment cleaning included. This is independent living only: there is no assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing on site, so residents who later need daily personal care arrange it privately or move. The amenity list is unusually extensive for a community of this size. It includes the Alice B. Restaurant, Gertie's Salon and Bar, a fitness center, a swimming pool and spa, a fenced dog park, a bocce ball court, a putting green, a screening room and a desert oasis garden area. Hair, manicure, pedicure and massage services are available on site, and a full-time activities director coordinates social events and outings. The community publishes pricing as starting at under $5,000 a month and reported a small number of remaining residences at the time of our review. North Park Seniors is an affordable apartment community for people aged 55 and over in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego, developed by Community HousingWorks. It was the first affordable senior housing development in the City of San Diego to provide programming for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents. The property has 76 homes, of which 75 are income-restricted, affordable to households earning roughly 50 to 60 percent of the San Diego area median income. Published rents have run from about $740 for a studio to about $1,150 for a two-bedroom. The building is not restricted to LGBTQIA+ residents: any older adult within the income limits is eligible. Community HousingWorks developed the property in partnership with The San Diego LGBT Community Center, which provides on-site supportive services including resources, referrals and community activities for residents. The building is fully ADA accessible and its shared space includes a community center and lounge, a courtyard, a community garden, community computers, an outdoor eating area with a barbecue, laundry, and a rooftop viewing deck over the San Diego skyline. Rents and income limits are adjusted periodically, so confirm current figures with the leasing office.

The Openhouse community at 55 Laguna is affordable senior housing in San Francisco connected to Openhouse, the nonprofit that serves LGBTQIA+ seniors and older adults with disabilities across the city. Openhouse describes its work as creating opportunities with, and not just for, LGBTQIA+ seniors to build and reconnect with community, and the housing sits inside that wider program rather than beside it. Residents are close to the Bob Ross LGBT Senior Center at 65 Laguna Street, where Openhouse runs its community programming. Openhouse services include resource and housing navigation, support services, community engagement programs, and Club 75, an adult day program co-designed with On Lok. The housing is income-qualified, so eligibility depends on household income rather than on being part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Pride Place is LGBTQIA+-affirming senior housing and community hub in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. GenPride, which advocates for older LGBTQIA+ adults and runs programs built around well-being and belonging, is based on the ground floor at 1521 Broadway. That ground floor is the reason this building is different from an affirming apartment block. GenPride runs information and assistance, a hot lunch program, a community calendar of social programming, and training for organizations that want to serve LGBTQIA+ elders better. Residents do not have to travel to reach any of it. GenPride's hours are Monday to Thursday, 10am to 3pm. Apartments themselves are leased by the building's property manager rather than by GenPride, so ask GenPride about programs and the property manager about availability, rent and income limits.

Stonewall Gardens is an assisted-living community in Palm Springs, California, built specifically for LGBTQIA+ older adults and their friends. It is one of a small number of purpose-built affirming assisted-living communities in the United States, and the community describes its work as supporting compassionate, graceful aging in an environment that is welcoming, supportive and respectful. The community sits on North Palm Canyon Drive with views toward the San Jacinto mountains, and care staff are on site 24 hours a day. Day-to-day support covers the usual assisted-living range: help with bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living, medication management, and coordination with hospice when a resident's needs change. Stonewall Gardens describes its approach as person-centered, which in practice means residents are expected to keep their own routines, relationships and way of living rather than fit an institutional schedule. For many LGBTQIA+ elders that is the whole question, because going back into the closet to feel safe in care is a common and well-documented fear. The community is licensed by California as a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly, license number 336426505, which you can look up yourself through the California Department of Social Services. Triangle Square is a 104-unit affordable apartment community for people aged 62 and over, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, a short walk from the Hollywood and Vine Metro station. It was developed with the Los Angeles LGBT Center, which provides social services, meals and activities to residents on site. Homes are one and two bedrooms. Each has heating and air conditioning, a full kitchen with a range and oven, a refrigerator, vinyl flooring and a shower fitted with grab bars. Some apartments have a private balcony or patio. Shared space is a real part of the offer here rather than a lobby and a noticeboard. Residents have a swimming pool, a community room with outdoor patio seating, a community garden, an art room, a computer lounge and library, a TV room, a fitness center, and laundry facilities on every floor. Resident parking is available subject to availability, and the property is non-smoking and pet friendly. The Los Angeles LGBT Center runs lunch five days a week through its culinary arts program, alongside on-site activities, monthly resident celebrations and inclusive holiday events.
