About

Fountaingrove Lodge is a senior-living community in Santa Rosa, California, for adults 55 and over, built for LGBTQIA+ older adults and their allies. It is one of the earliest purpose-built affirming communities of its kind in the country and remains one of the few that spans more than one level of care on a single campus.

Homes range from one-bedroom apartments to two-bedroom suites and bungalows. Independent living, assisted living and memory care are all offered, and the community reports full-time nursing staff on site seven days a week, which is the practical difference between a community you may have to leave and one you may not.

Shared amenities include dining led by an executive chef, a swimming pool and hot tub, a wellness center, and patio and garden space. Activities are programd rather than incidental, and the community's stated aim is a living experience that celebrates the vibrancy of living authentically as an LGBTQIA+ person and ally.

Pricing is not published. Life-plan and continuing-care communities often involve an entrance fee as well as a monthly charge, and the structure varies considerably between contracts, so ask specifically what is refundable and what happens if your care needs change.

Licensing & inspections

In California, residential care facilities for the elderly are licensed by the Community Care Licensing Division of the California Department of Social Services. Its public register is the place to confirm this provider holds a current licence and to read whatever inspection history the state publishes.

Residential care facility for the elderly is California's term for assisted living. Facility records include citations and the reports behind them.

Search the Community Care Facility register

We link the register rather than copying records out of it. State licensing data is published in a different shape in every state, updated on its own schedule, and a stale copy of a licence is worse than no copy.

Questions to ask

10 things worth asking before you decide, chosen because the public record does not answer them. A blank means nobody has published the answer, not that the answer is bad.

  • Can a same-sex couple share a room or an apartment, on the same terms as any other couple, at every level of care you offer?
  • Who counts as family for visiting, for medical updates and for decisions, if the person closest to me is not a relative or a spouse?
  • Do you have a written nondiscrimination policy that names sexual orientation and gender identity? Can I have a copy?
