Mary's House for Older Adults describes itself as Washington DC's first affordable LGBTQIA+ and same-gender-loving affirming communal living space for adults aged 60 and over. Its residence, the Anacostia Road House, opened east of the river in a part of the city that has very little affirming senior housing of any kind. The model is communal rather than apartment-block: independent older adults share a house and its common space, with the organization's stated aim being to celebrate the whole person as they age. It is framed explicitly as social-justice housing. The organization won an AARP Purpose Prize in 2022. Its administrative office is at 474 Ridge Street NW, separate from the residence. The house was listed as now leasing at the time of our review. Resident numbers, income limits and rents are not published, so contact the organization directly.
